  3. Some years ago I went to a nature reserve with friends. There were cottages to live in, elementary facilities, not much at all for miles around - good fun. One afternoon I went for a walk alone, and in due course needed the bathroom, which of course did not exist. So I found a bush and went into the middle of it, in complete privacy. When I was finished, I turned around and started walking out: right in front of me and amazingly large was the hind leg of a full-grown giraffe, and of course the rest of the critter. I hadn't heard it arrive. Not a rustle, not a sound of hoof on dry ground. I waited in silence until it wandered off. One of the best things that's ever happened to me!

  5. I have a soft spot in my heart for giraffes ever since I spent every waking moment of my life watching April and waiting for her to give birth.
