WHY CAN'T I EVER REMEMBER THE NAME OF THAT SAINT?

When I was in elementary school (a ga-jillion and a half years ago), we learned about the saints. I remember that St. Sebastian was the one who was shot full of arrows, and that St. Ignacius was the one who had his leg blown off, but for the life of me I can't remember the name of the saint that they put to death by cooking him on a big bar-be-que grill. (You know the one...he said "I think I'm done on this side, could somebody please turn me over?").

Or at least that's how I remember the story anyway.

So we're having a heat wave. This means, of course, that I will be firmly planted in my house with the blinds drawn, fans a-blowin', and nothing on but bike shorts and a big girl sports bra. In other words....things are totally status quo here at Chez Spinster and by noon I will be miserable and sweaty and looking for a big bag of ice to take to the bathtub with me for a swim.

I hate hot weather. I'm not built for it. I like cold weather. Like Dr. Zhivago cold, where everybody wears lots and lots of layers and nobody can see that you haven't had a razor anywhere near your shins in months and months. When you can eat things like meatloaf and stew and not feel guilty about sitting inside with your stitching rather than jogging through the park.

(Who am I kidding? I'm 45 years old and have never jogged through the park or anywhere else for that matter. Jogging is not something I ever learned to do and I've got the big fat a** to prove it.)

So Stewey and I are camped out in the family room with iced tea and the Daisychain ABC's crewel sampler for company.
He wanted me to send along his most heartfelt thanks for your good wishes. The eye drops and Prednisone seemed to have done their trick, so I am able, once again to stare into his limpid pools of love. (Actually, his eyes are dilated and as big as saucers, so every time I look at him I think of Lady GaGa and those whacky contact lenses that she wears.)

Here's hoping that your neck of the woods is a lot more comfortable and that your week will be full of cool breezes and lots of stitching.

And a meatloaf.

  2. I cannot remember that saint either. Sister Mary Francis would be so upset. I guess my Catholic education was for naught. Of course, I have no memory anyway. I remember that line of course.

  3. You're thinking of St. Lawrence:

And don't be too impressed - I work at a Catholic newspaper!

  5. Love that alphabet! It is just so darned cute. It would make an adorable pillow.

I am totally with you about the heat. It has been in the 100's here and I feel like a big sweaty mess. The only thing worse than the heat - the heat when you have to wear control top panty hose. I too am 45 with a big fat a**!

Thanks for making me laugh again today!

  6. St. Lawrence and St. Carpus are said to have been broiled ... St. Carpus is reputed to have asked his torturers to turn the spit since he was done on one side.

  7. I think we have a new saint in the making - St. Kerri for wearing control top panty hose in this heat! I'm in the Baked Apple, that is Manhattan. Glad to hear Stewey is on the mend. Love, love, love the sampler.....

  8. It is in the 90's here in Alabama with a high humidity to match. Actually, this week is like a cool front because we have been near 100 for the last week or so with heat index near 110 some days. And on top of that, my own personal 'heat wave' that comes along with being 53 and going through the change. Well, I'd like to change it with a nice cool dip in the pool please. Glad Stewey is on the mend.

  9. I am sure you must mean ST Lawrence. Patron Saint of Barbecue. I kid you not. I looked it up. There really is a patron Saint of Barbecue! Wikipedia says so.

It says he was cooked on gridiron. And I thought that was the football field. LOL

I am so glad that poor Stewey is feeling better.

Hope you stay cool...I am just a couple hours north and east of you in Michigan and we are to have 90* plus until next Sunday - Yuck!! I plan on staying cool in my stitching chair/nest.

    Very funny post and comments.

Have you ever tried Celestial Seasonings Candy Cane Lane tea? It tastes like a York Peppermint Patty and is fabulous as iced tea.

It's usually for sale during the holiday season, but you can order it directly from the CS website. I ordered an entire case anticipating this very hot weather we have had (and are about to have). I'm in Asheville, NC. It was unbearably hot awhile ago, then it cooled down, but I hear we are next on the list for the high temperatures.

I love your beautiful stitching, Coni. I've said before it's almost inspirational enough to get me to pick up that type of needle. My craft is quilting (by machine). However, I don't think I have the patience.

It's nice though that we can all enjoy each other's crafts. Actually, your current project has inspired me to try to do something similar, but on a quilt. We'll see how it goes.

So glad Stewey is feeling better!

I wish I would have a bit of your hot weather, not too hot though...we have that way too hot way too often in summer here. But right now it's Winter here in Australia, and it's raining and COLD ...(not happy here)

  21. Oh my goodness! I turn my back for a second and that alphabet grows like a weed, only much more attractive. The good part about being so late in my blog reading is that I didn't have to wait but a few minutes from your previous post to find out that Stewey is feeling better.
