ME AND THE BREAD BAKING? MAYBE NOT SO MUCH.

It'll be easy, they said. Only three ingredients! How hard could it possibly be? Flour, sugar, and a can of beer mixed and into the oven for 45 minutes!

OK. Maybe not.

So this time we'll try a different recipe. One with sugar, beer, flour, salt, and baking soda. Baling soda! Yea! That's it!

Damnit.

Tomorrow is a new day.

Maybe we'll try English muffin bread?

  1. In the culinary world, I understand that there are cooks and there are bakers, but very few who are both. We have seen that you are a wonderful cook, but maybe not so much a baker (Greek cookies, hmmm?) Maybe that is enough?

And you can stitch a primo plum pudding!

  2. Valiant effort though. Keep trying and make notes as you go. Hubby had some terrible results from baking but he kept at it (reading the recipe properly helped in one instance) and now he is the chef. He still can't do frittatas or omelettes - and I make the curry. I sort of miss the baking side of it - but I don't have to clean up afterwards! Always a silver lining on every cloud! LOL!
Still no ducklings - checked yesterday and they are there, just not ready to come out in the cold wind - don't blame them either!

  3. Coni, try artisan bread. It's so easy. Mix it together before bed, put it in the oven in the morning. It's awesome, hard crust & soft inside. There are a million recipes on line. My family loves it!!!

  4. Coni: Check King Arthur Flour's website. They have some very easy bread recipes using yeast and time. They are the Artisan type recipes listed above.

Be aware, the type of flour you use will influence the recipe. All purpose vs Bread Flour. Do not use Self-rising flour with that type recipe.

  5. Actually the three ingredient beer bread uses 3 cups of self-rising flour (all purpose won’t work unless you add in the baking powder and salt that’s already in the self rising) 3 tablespoons of sugar and a 12 oz. bottle of beer. Sprinkled with sesame seeds, bake at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes. Brush top with melted butter and bake 10-15 minutes longer. Been making this since my first job in 1983!

    1. I have been making the beer bread. It is not supposed to rise very high. But do not under bake! I use regular flour but add 4 tsp. baking powder to 3 cups of flour. It's delicious. Also beer must be at room temperature. I just set can on counter for a couple hours or so.

  6. The best & most reliable bread recipe ever. But notice it makes four 1-lb loaves, so just make 1/2 or 1/4 of the recipe.

  7. That first picture looks like my first attempt at making a pound cake. Who knew there were differences between flours?!?!?!

  8. Oh dear! I have never tried to make bread but I am pretty near positive I would have the same results.
