IT MUST BE AN OHIO THING
My Jersey Boy is aghast, I tell ya....simply aghast.
A big pot of chili has been bubbling away all day, and when it came time to sit down to dinner I decided to make some pasta to go with it. (See those elbow macaronis under all of that goodness in my bowl?)
Magoo just gawped at me like I had lost my mind.
Apparently, in all of his years on this planet he has never enjoyed what we lovingly used to call "chili mac" when I was a kid. Cincinnati has its chili atop spaghetti...we had it atop macaronis, especially at school. Chili mac was a staple and a truly revered dish of my childhood, and I suppose I was feeling nostalgic or something since it's a football Saturday and my Irish pulled off a victory.
But Rich? Nope. Not a fan of the chili mac. He pronounced it something only a "medigan" would eat, and ate his without.
Good.
More for me to have as leftovers this week!
So tell me, Dearies. Chili with or without?

Sorry, but this NY gal eats chili sans the mac!
ReplyDeleteSt. Louis born and raised, love chili mac!
ReplyDeleteGrew up in Illinois. Loved the chili mac.
ReplyDeleteSorry-in Texas it's chili without the mac!
ReplyDeleteVirginia-not a chili state, nor is Vermont but I’m a Cincinnati style fan so bring on the Mac. We have a place called Hard Times Cafe where chili Mac is the star.
ReplyDeleteI'm from southern California originally, but have been in Michigan 40 years and I eat mine WITH!!
ReplyDelete125 miles west of St. Louis we DON'T eat that. And yes, it is a very regional thing - they didn't eat it in New York or Washington (state) either! i'm with Magoo on this one ;)
ReplyDeleteI was born & raised in Illinois outside of St. Louis, and chili mac was a childhood favorite. But tell me about your cheese preference: Cheddar or American? I go the Cheddar route, but my dad always insisted on American.
ReplyDeleteThis born & bred Jersey girl grew up eating chili mac!
ReplyDeleteBorn in NJ, never had it there, moved to Illinois and started eating it...love the chili mac! PS...has to have kidney beans in it too, much to the dismay of many in my family!
ReplyDeletesouthern Jersey girl and NO! to chili mac. I can see where some may love it. Try some chili on top of a baked potato? That is pretty awesome! lol
ReplyDeleteChili with! and it was my Ct husband who introduced that deliciousness to this Midwesterner. He's Zzzzz-ing right now so I'll ask him in the a.m. where he picked it up.
ReplyDeleteMichigan born and bred--dad from Chicago and mom from Boston MA--never heard of chili mac, but our chili definitely has beans in it.
ReplyDeleteCanadian here -- never heard of chili mac. I will have to try some! I like my chili over rice. And I'm with CapeCodGirl565 on the kidney beans, although black beans are also good.
ReplyDeleteI'm a Colorado girl, but have no clue the proper Colorado way to eat chili. I've not had chili with macaroni, but it sounds good. I'll eat it with corn bread underneath or heaped with plenty of cheese and a dollop of sour cream. I've been known to top it with Fritos. Chili is great for creativity!
ReplyDeleteMac? No thanks. But I'll always eat a Frito Chili Pie (fritos, chili, cheese, onions for some, sour cream. Great. Now I'm hungry haha :)
ReplyDeleteNever tried it - always a first time. Sometimes we use couscous or bulgur wheat, usually rice - but with tortillas to wrap it in!
ReplyDeleteI like French fries with my turkey chili, and I must have chickpeas in my turkey chili with lots of chili powder and cumin.
ReplyDeletefrom texas--living in ct.--have my chili sans macaroni.
ReplyDeleteIt looks good, but make mine without the beans!
ReplyDeleteOn Texas the big discussion is beans or no beans. Never heard of chili mac but might try it. Frito chili pie is a,favorite with onions on top. Cheese optional. This has been interesting. So many choices. I have been known to eat chili over cornbread. But never mske cornbread with added sugar. Ock.
ReplyDeleteNothing more interesting than people!!
Mine without the noodles please! Otherwise it looked delicious!
ReplyDeleteSANS please. Also without cinnamon which is apparently another delicacy. This Virginia gal likes her chili as chili. Cornbread is great with it. Mac ... not so much.
ReplyDeleteI love it both ways. If we have elbow mac on hand I'll use it, if not oh well just as good. Add lots of cheese and some sour cream and I'm good to go. Either way I always have cornbread on the side.
ReplyDeleteOne of the few disagreements my husband and I have had was over chili. I am from Indiana. Hoosiers eat it with macaroni and it is soupy like soup or stew. He is from Maine and lived in Oklahoma 35 years. He eats it with meat and a few beans and thick enough to use a fork. I made chili the first fall we were together. He would not even try it and made me so mad I went to a hotel for the night. Now we laugh, I make macaroni on the side and all is well. So yes pasta is an important part of the chili!
ReplyDeletePasta with everything! I even have a dessert pasta recipe, called Frog Eye Salad. It's a fruit salad with Ancini de Pepe,& it makes A HUGE batch...
ReplyDeleteIf you really want to try something truly delicious, put your chili over rice and put a fried egg on top!
ReplyDeleteWITH I LOVE Chili MAC and i am in CA
ReplyDeleteWe eat ours here in South Wales with rice. My Oklahoman daughter in law was not impressed. They eat it with corn chips apparently-unknown here!
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of eating chili with pasta. On fries or a hotdog around here but mostly just in a bowl with a spoon.
ReplyDeleteAre you kidding me? I'm a Jersey girl and WE had chili mac. Heck even Chef Boyardee had a version of it. Love it!
