After languishing in the BAP basket for nine years, the Prairie Schooler alphabet project has come out to play. I pondered the orientation of the linen almost all day yesterday, and thought I had decided on a vertical (rather than horizontal as pictured above) approach, but now I'm changing my mind. If I go vertical, the bottom row will only have three blocks instead of four, and I think that will end up driving me nuts.
More pondering to ensue...
I had thought about venturing to the Dressing Downton exhibit at the history museum today, but I awoke a bit punk and don't want to push my luck. I have an appointment tomorrow that will force me out of the house, so I suppose I could postpone a day and hang one more day in pajamas in front of the fireplace.
Maybe I'm becoming a good patient after all!
Is it the size of the blocks? 6x4 = 24 letters of the alphabet. Stay in today and keep warm!

There are 26 letters in the alphabet aren't there?
Deleteoh dear Edy YOU are Correct!
DeleteAs Gilda Radner used to say ...Neva mindddd

Wonderful choice! Enjoy Coni...I am looking forward to seeing your start and progress.

Hanging out in your pjs and stitching all day can only be good for your health!
ReplyDeletePerfect day for pj's & pondering
ReplyDeleteHealth is important to being able to stitch well. Have some hot chocolate or tea & snuggle under your blanket in your comfy chair.
Absolutely gorgeous PS your work will be beautifully exicuted I'm sure. Blessings Baa
Cozy in your pjs and in front of a fire sounds fabulous. I look forward to seeing your progress on the Prairie Schooler alphabet piece. Go Coni!
ReplyDeleteHave fun with Prairie Schooler alphabet! I'm just OCD enough that an unequal number of blocks in one row would drive me to distraction too.
ReplyDeleteWith your extra spot, why not put a block with your information as the stitcher: Name and Date and anything else you'd like to put. I bet you could even make it look like it was supposed to be there.
ReplyDeleteI love pamelaric's idea!
ReplyDeleteNice choice. It's a great to stay in jammies here too. I have my blankies and kindlea ready. Hope you feel better.
ReplyDeleteThe piece is GORGEOUS! and it should keep you busy for a while, or should I say, a lot of whiles.
ReplyDeleteThere is?was? a link to a PS alphabet group on Vonna (Twisted Stitcher) site. It is psabcbee.blogspot.com. You should check it out! If you decide to stitch it all as one piece one of the stitchers noted discrepancies in the stitch count on several letters (post from 2/22/10) Anyway LOTS of inspiration. I joined a few years back but did I get more than the letter A done-NO. If you start that will inspire me to get back to it. Although over one??seriously what was I thinking!
ReplyDeleteGreat choices - stitched piece, pjs, fireplace and all.

I love this so much, have it in my stash, and have no idea when I will get to it. But, I agree, orient it however works for you to hang something so large. I think I will need a new house or wall if the time ever comes.
ReplyDeleteThe PS alphabet has been one of my favorites for a long time. It's in my to do box and hopefully will get it started this year. I have several large samplers that are on their last leg and I need to finish those before starting a new one.
ReplyDeleteNot sure if I should be throwing out this plug, but you've mentioned coloring and your ipad "thingie" in previous blogs. I found a wonderful free download called Cross-Stitch World. It's basically a color by number into a grid that makes a cross stitch. The pictures are great fun and I do it when I'm tired and feeling blah. It's also inspired me to get cross-stitching!
ReplyDeleteThanks for mentioning Cross Stitch World. They have a good Needlepoint supply too which is getting scarcer it seems.
DeleteWith respect to your debacle with the ort jars...check at Meijer or K-Mart (if they are still in your area)...I believe both chains carry glass Ball jars, they just might carry the plastic ones as well. Or you could use peanut butter jars, i.e. Skippy, various sizes similar too Ball jars...just a thought...one Hoosier to another
ReplyDeleteBut if you center the last blocks, it would look ok.
ReplyDeleteHave a fun day in your PJ's!
Marilyn
Amazing choice. This is an heirloom project. Either way it will be a work of art.
ReplyDeleteOh no Connie, now you've made me want it. I've had this on my wish list for ages; it is a wonderful piece I think. You will do the most amazing job with it. Happy Stitching dear.
ReplyDeleteI adored doing this project! It will be fun to watch your progress.
ReplyDeleteOooooohhhh... the Dressing Downton exhibit could be temptation enough to make me actually get dressed and leave my lair! But to quote Scarlet: "Tomorrow is another day."

ReplyDeleteSo excited to see you start this!! Once of the ladies in my stitching guild is stitching this and it is ever more gorgeous in person. Hope your appointment goes well today!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with this new start I would love to try that one too.
ReplyDeleteI have been thinking of doing this one as well. I think it is easiest to view horizontally, but I like the idea of it vertically. My concern is that some blocks are 71, 72 and 74 stitches wide, but most are 70. So, the centering is hard for me to visualize. I start in the upper left corner, not the middle, so I'm worried about lining them up. I'm sure you have seen Thread Garden's flosstube video about it. It is such a challenge! You go first! Good luck.
ReplyDeleteIs it needlepoint or Cross stitch?
ReplyDeleteRuth in Oxnard CA.
Oh I can see now it's cross stitch.
DeleteLove the PS Alphabet project. I remember seeing one that someone posted that was done vertically. They added another square that had a winter or Christmas theme to it as the last square and it really did look nice. I don't remember where I saw it posted, but I would think that you could easily add another pattern or a portion of a PS pattern to the alphabets and it would look nice all together. Just a thought in case you really want to do a vertical piece. Happy stitching.............
ReplyDeleteYour sampler is going to be wonderful. It would be hard for me not to venture out to see that exhibit if I was close to it.
ReplyDeleteHugs and feel better.
I stitched this alphabet vertically. Top and bottom rows are three letters each, middle rows are 5 blocks wide. Then in each of the corners I sttiched three little blocks (choose whatever letters you like) and then one of these: dates stitched, my name, my city and state, and "The Prairie Schooler Alphabet."
