Love the picture. I grew up in Mobile, AL, where originated the Cowbellion de Rakein Society. At some point it began to land on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday and was called Mardi Gras. So Mardi Gras started there. New Orleans, of course, grew it bigger and wilder -- and likely more notiorious. I'm sure it's changed hugely even in Mobile since the 50s, not necessarily for the better.
