For cross stitch I love Dyeing to Stitch in VA Beach, VA; Silver Needle in Tulsa, OK; and Heart's Desire in Wichita, KS. I've heard great things about Hobby House in NY but have not been there. For painted canvas and a huge selection of threads there's Diversion's Needlepoint in Denver, CO. I know you can get blank canvas there, not sure about canvaswork patterns. Debby in CO.
I wish I could answer! But there isn't a single needlepoint shop in my entire country. Here and there, a knitting wool shop also stocks embroidery cottons and the occasional roll of blank canvas, 10/20 beige and 18 white. And sometimes a very few 'painted' canvases, actually printed and usually featuring an affectionate couple in bathing costumes under a palm tree on a beach at sunset. There are some lovely cottons available - House of Embroidery is a local business - but mostly DMC. So my favourite sources for needlepoint designs and patterns, and if I'm feeling prosperous also painted canvases, are on the Internet. I'm busy with a huge Swans wall hanging from Glorafilia in the UK, and my modest stash contains a couple of Laura Perins (I've done one!). I also did a Rainbow Horses pic from Lizart, and dear Liz was very supportive and kind when I wanted to insert a quote on it for the friend whose present it was going to be. So I suppose my motto should be "Lead Me Out Of No Temptation, Please!", though it is good for my budget.
I live near Boston and my “go to” needlepoint shop is Stitch Boutique. There are two locations; downtown Boston and Winchester MA, just outside. I haven’t done cross stitch in years.
Barefoot Needle Arts in Surfside, SC. A delightful, somewhat new cross stitch shop with tip top service! My go to spot when I visit my daughter in Myrtle Beach as I haven't found any cross stitch shops in NC...only the big box stores...with the same old same old.
Travel all over the country and by far, my favorite cross stitch shop is House of Stitches in LaPorte, IN. Linda and her staff are the best! Favorite needlepoint shops are Emily's in Northbrook, IL and Needlepoint in Paradise in Naples, FL. I frequent both shops for their large inventory of threads, their great selection of canvases, both in inventory and through frequent trunk shows and their knowledgeable staff.
Fancy Stitches Cleburne, TX for needlepoint. Gayle is the best owner and always able to come up with ideas. Their samples are wonderful. They do carry a small amount of cross stitch.
The local cross stitch store owner retired years ago. 'Needlepoint.com' is a brick and mortar store in Raleigh, NC , with needlepoint kits, canvases, threads , you name it. The website will give you a good overview of what they offer https://needlepoint.com/.
I have not visited in over two years, but it was always a pleasant store with helpful staff.
In Stitches, Alexandria VA. Actually it's in Fairfax County VA but called Alexandria. I also like Waste Knot Needlepoint in Arlington, as they specialize in canvas work and all the threads and bling for it.
1 & 3 - Village Sampler in St. Albans, WV - in business 35 years - lovey staff, tons of cross stitch, loads of counted canvas, huge selection of threads, some needlepoint
In Stitches in Alexandria, VA for both counted cross stitch and needlepoint. If you see it somewhere else, especially if it's obscure, Ellen will hunt it down and get it for you. Plus she's about half an hour from my house, so many happy hours are spent perusing the tons of stuff she has in stock.
Strawberry Sampler in West Chester, PA is cross stitch. Beehive Needlearts in Mount Lebanon, PA is cross stitch and painted canvas and I believe counted canvas, Peacock Alley Needlepoint in Ada, MI for painted canvas. Bedecked & Bedazzled in Lutherville, MD for all things needlepoint.
My favorite cross stitch shop would have to be Accents in Stitches down in Metairie, LA (just outside of New Orleans). My favorite Needlepoint shop (painted canvas) and also my favorite place for threads is the Elegant Needle in Baton Rouge. I don't really have a counted canvas shop, but I know if I can find the pattern online, I can get what I need at the Elegant Needle.
Just places to note if you ever want to head down here for some Jazz and amazing food.
My favorite shop is The Stitcher's Garden in Conway, AR which is on the opposite side of the country from CA. They have excellent customer service and lots to buy! They ship out quickly! My other favorite is 123 Stitch! Favorite Needlepoint shop - none, I have tons to stitch. Many needlepoint designers have their own websites. Why is everyone coming up Anonymous???? Love Laura Perin Designs (charted), wonderful instructions, designs, cyberclasses.
Local-ish needlework stores - Heritage Designs in Amana IA has a nice needlework section, at one end of the building, quilting at the other. And Little Red Hen in Muscatine IA now has an entire room for needlework now. Both are geared toward embroidery & cross stitch, no needlepoint or counted canvas items. Since the Marion library board faffing about with where to build a new library drove Village Needlework in Marion IA, out of business, I don't know of any local-ish sources of needlepoint or counted canvas materials. There's a couple of needlework shops in northern Iowa, but that's a bit far to go. On line - I've ordered a few things from 123Stitch and been happy with them. Thanks to those who made needlepoint and counted canvas shops, I think my checkbook just cringed.
I’ve a few that I love - The Stitching Post in Catonsville MD is mostly cross stitch with a bit of needlepoint - if Melinda doesn’t have it she’ll work with you to find it or make recommendations. Hillside Needlearts in Stevenson MD is all needlepoint, Leslie and Amy are great. Denise’s in St Michaels MD - all needlepoint and Denise always has a smile and great recommendations, The Point of It All in DC (all needlepoint) and Waste Knot in Fairfax (ish) VA - Lori is super. I stopped cross stitching when my eyes started uh…”aging” and found needlepoint easier and more relaxing - I hope this helps!
Kathy Rees/Needle Delights is my favorite counted NP shop. You can buy directly from her.
Favorite NP shop is Peacock Alley. They have a great FB group too and you can be invited to join after your first purchase.
Cross stitch is harder. Not just one. Drema at Needlecraft Corner is great - her thread prices can't be beat (she has an awesome anniversary sale on now that included Seraphim Fabrics). Dying to Stitch, Inspired Needle, The Attic (for silks esp) and favorite smaller shop is Victorian Rose.
Favorite painted canvas shop is Waste Knot Needlepoint in Arlington, VA and yes, I confess to being biased as I work there. Large canvas inventory and as many thread lines as we could squeeze in.
Cross stitch in person would be In Stitches in Alexandria. But Hobby House Needleworks has been my pandemic store.
Can only answer #1 as I haven't done needlepoint in over 40 years. Stitches 'n Things in Fenton, MI

ReplyDeleteI use the Attic for my serious stitching needs, but the other two for basic and fun to stitch projects.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Salty Yarns in Ocean City MD, and Stitches Unlimited in Lancaster PA.
