INQUIRING MINDS...

Believe it or not....I am often asked questions about my particular habits when it comes to this thing of ours.  One of the questions that I'm asked most frequently is "Hey, Spinster Stitcher!  Why the heck do you start all of your projects in the lower left corner?"

I've pondered and pondered and pondered how to answer this in a way that will convince you that I am NOT, in fact, a nutball of the highest orders, but alas,  I am unable to do so.

So with that in mind....

I start all of my projects in the lower left corner because I have the compulsive need to create a piece from the ground up.  When you combine that with the fact that I also have some sort of warped and twisted fear that the stitches I've put in will somehow slide off the bottom of the piece unless there's a border there to stop them, you can see how my epitaph rings so very true.

(Remember....tombstone?...."It wasn't easy being me")

So there you have it.   I start my projects at the lower left corner because of a pathological need to control everything around me (except, apparently, what I stuff into my gaping maw each day), and the pathological fear I have that if we stray too far we might just fall off of the edge of something like a needlework project, or the Earth, depending upon your perspective.

See?  Told ya.

Nut.  Ball.

  1. Inquiring minds want to know...do you start in the lower corner on canvas projects?

  2. I start my projects in the top left corner so as to keep all my stitches from floating off the top of the piece . . . . heh, heh.

  3. I was curious but did not want to ask! I start in the upper left corner....

  4. Interesting. I tend to start in the upper left corner, or in the middle if I'm feeling insecure about the amount of fabric I have.

  5. Hello Spinster,

Your are not a nut ball because I too start my projects in the lower left corner and work my way up. Smart minds think alike I say:)

  6. Your work is lovely as usual. I also start my design in the lower left corner. For years I started in the center as most directions say you should but I always hated doing that. Then one day I started a new project and began in the lower corner and found this to be much easier and natural for me. Love your blog. Hugs to you and Stewie. Connie Moser in Illinois

  7. If you're right-handed, it keeps your stitching cleaner your way. I know that when I needlepoint, if a stitch doesn't have to be worked from right to left, I tend to start on the left side so that I'm not dragging my bracelets and sleeve over the stuff I already stitched.

  8. Oh, dear Spinster Stitcher---- we all have our little quirks. Don't you think that is (part of) what makes us interesting? I love reading your blog. Having done so for several years, I can safely say that you are nothing if not interesting. Stay warm, and tell Stewie I said hello.

  9. When I taught Counted Cross Stitch, I always explained that the "proper" way to begin was in the dead center. However, I also said that contrary to being proper, I began in the upper left. I love seeing the work unfold as I move downward. Needlepoint is different, though, as I always start bottom right. Guess I'm a nutball, too!

  10. Coni, your explanation makes perfect sense to me, honest! And bless your sweet lil heart for not asking us to share our personal little quirks. My "quicks" cross the fine line directly over to crazy town. Enjoy your stitching jag and you and the little master stay warm and safe and happy! :)
