After my pronouncement that I was just going to do my thing, I sat down to stitch only to realize that my stitching of the entire second page of this design is off by one stitch someplace.
One lousy stitch.
Now, I know what you're thinking. "Oh, dear Spinster Stitcher! Don't fret over one lousy stitch. Surely the intricate design of the angel's dress will allow for compensation someplace."
But this is me we're talking about.
So I went into the kitchen and set the timer on the microwave for two minutes and I got an ice cream sandwich.
(What can I say? My diet has consisted of foods that any self-respecting six year old would eat...hot dogs, mac and cheese, fruit roll ups, ice cream sandwiches, and Honey Nut Cheerios.)
(But I digress.)
For two minutes I allowed myself a full-on fretting, hair pulling, self-flagellating session of criticism and recrimination. I paced back and forth and wagged my finger in my own face and lectured myself about the dangers of being a rebel, and I adequately shamed myself for the prancy dancing episodes of "Look at me! Look at me!" that lead to my fall.
Sister Mary Paperplate would have been proud.
When the timer beeped (and I had finished my ice cream sandwich), I gathered my wits, washed my hands, re-filled my sippy cup with ice water, and I hit the Happy Chair once again.
Still loving dear Vaceila, even if she's not exactly perfectly perfect in every way.
I'm off to find the vacuum cleaner. I promised the boys that I would do something about the haz mat situation that this house has become before we settle in for our afternoon nap. I figure a swipe or two of the Swiffer and a few minutes Hoovering will be a good way to start the weekend!
Happy Friday, kids! Do something fun and come tell us all about it!
Only G-d is perfect. We are mere mortals.
ReplyDeleteDon't you just HATE when that happens? In my younger years I'd either throw the project out or start over. These days, my wiser (and more broken) mind says to hell with it, and I just carry on. I can't say I've yet learned to *enjoy* imperfection...perhaps that wisdom will come by the time I hit age 50.
ReplyDeleteConi, attitude is everything, and yours is wonderful. Mine, not so much.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, mistakes happen to me often enough to give up counted cross stitching! I can follow geometric patterns and most charts, but complicated cross stitch frustrates me. I stitch for pleasure instead.
I have this design somewhere in my stash. So, I have been advidely watching you stitch this to encourage me to pull it out and begin stitching mine. I would say that if you are just now realizing that you are off one stitch - it may not be that far from where you have left off stitching. I would give it a rest for a day or two. Then sit down and figure out where the mis-stitch was made. Once that is figured out. Then I would think about letting it go and making adjustments going forward or, or frogging and fixing it. Up to you. I've done both at one time or another. I'm the only one that knows...
ReplyDeleteStitchers, when you get to my age, 78, I can keep on stitching with a thread off without a care in the world. Who looks at my stitching that close anyway. Honey Nut Cheeros for breakfast and a snicker bar and diet Pepsi for lunch.
ReplyDeleteConi, we might be related.
O Margaret dear, so true..... Coni, I love your solution with the timer and ice cream indulgence. Besides, a plane
ReplyDeletegoing over will never notice the missed stitch and you are
sufficiently clever to shift and make do. More importantly, continue celebrating yourself... I have it
on Stewey's authority that you are so right.....

ReplyDeleteI once stitched a piece and was one stitch off on a border around some words directly in the center of the piece. I stitched and pulled out about 3 times, always ending up with the same results. Disgusted, I tweaked a few things and left the mistake. To this day, I cannot find where that mistake is. Lesson learned! :)
ReplyDeleteGood for you Coni! I think Vaceila is stunning. You could trade out your Honey Nut Cheerios for Pumpkin Cheerios in honor of the cooler temps and coming fall season. Have a fabulous weekend!
ReplyDeletePumpkin Cheerios???? That sounds like an event to celebrate.
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoyed your nap. I'm in Saturday now and with the predictions of rain I am hoping to hit my own happy chair this afternoon and get some stitching in to the peaceful sound of rain and Downton Abbey episodes. Bless you and the boys. Hugs & prayers, -Cathryn
ReplyDeleteIf being 1 thread off is the worse thing that happens to you today - It Is A Good Day! By the way I love this piece and your sense of humor.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, you always seem to make me smile. Thank you for sharing your hissy fit. Been there, though minus the ice cream sandwich. May have to redo my hissy fit routine and fit in an ice cream sandwich.....or at least a pop cycle.

I just hate when that happens! But with this design, all those little boxes & things, it should be fairly easy to work around it and not do any unstitching.
ReplyDeleteCan you imagine how many tapestries that hang in castles all over the UK are off by one stitch, but they are still stunning! It will be all right!! ;-)
ReplyDeleteSo maddening but it is gorgeous!! With or without mistakes ;)
ReplyDeleteYou think being one stitch off is bad...I was once 1/2 stitch off. I wish I could tell you something fun but so far this week I've been 2 a dentist, endodontist, and to the dental school (for a CT scan of said tooth). Not so fun!
ReplyDeleteBummer on the missed stitch. I hate when that happens.
