FIDDLE. STICKS.

Ahhhhh, the first stitchy dilemma of the year is upon me.

See that lovely center square bordered by varieagated waffles?  Fantastic, isn't it?  I think it took me about four days to get that part in.

Now see everything else?

Well, it's all off by one canvas thread.

There's supposed to be a space between the waffles and the green scotch stitches.  This means that all of the scotch stitches are in the wrong place, all of the Rhodes stitches are in the wrong place, and (worst of all) all of the Amadeus stitches are in the wrong place.

So...do I continue stitching and compensate to make up the difference, or do I break out the scissors and a large bottle of tequila and rip it all out and start again?

Rather than take this out to the driveway and back the car over it repeatedly, methinks I will take a few deep breaths and view this entire exercise as a test from the universe.  Perhaps she is trying to ask me if I've grown and changed and matured as a human person and learned to accept speedbumps on the path of life.

Or, more probably, she's just screwing with me.

Excuse me, please.  I need to be where other people are not for a moment so that I can curse a blue streak without fear of a big fat bar of soap headed to my mouth.  Talk amongst yourselves...be back in a flash!

  1. Looks good to me. Of course I don't have my glasses on at the moment. Question: Does it look good to YOU? Will you always see the mistake? If the mistake is all you see, start over. Otherwise, it's fine. By the way, I think I have a bottle of good gin. Want a drink?

  2. Don't take it out. It's symmetrical, as far as I can see.

  3. Your stitching is lovely, so I wouldn't rip it out. I would just adjust the next round of stitching

  4. It looks good/great to me. BUT, if the error causes you to want to gouge your eyes out every time you look at it, break out the scissors! I have a fresh bottle of Patron-- come on over and we'll commiserate.

  5. It looks beautiful. Don't take it out. Too much work has gone into it.

  6. That's a tough one, Coni! It looks perfect to me, but if you know the mistake is always going to bug you then I'd start ripping. I'll be right over with some Paw Paw Punch if you think it will help!

  7. I feel your pain! It happened to me on a piece of blackwork where all the points have to match .. well, at a certain point they didn't because I was one fabric thread off. I admit I fudged my way. Happy to say, it ended well and only I was the wiser.

  8. Compensate, compensate, compensate - Tequila, tequila, tequila...

  9. Bottom line: do what you have to do. For me: it looks great. If you have a bloody mary with with either tequila or vodka you could call it a health potion/drink.

  11. Hey Coni - chocolate and a good laugh is all that's needed. I couldn't see the mistake and when it's done, you'll probably be the only one to notice. Leave it as is, and when you notice it, use it as a reminder of the great coping skills you have and how you marched on. It's beautiful and your color choices are fantastic!

  12. It's beautiful! I go with continue stitching and compensate. Then when it's done re-name it "Life" cos isn't that what life's all about? ;)

  13. Coni, my math beanie's propeller doesn't always work, but it looks to me like there's no compensation needed until the very last border, where you'd have 5 empty threads instead of four if you work from the corners out.... Perhaps a half fan over 5 would show your cleverness far more than hours of frogging. You still have our permission to curse and drink, but no beating yourself up!!!

  14. The question I always ask myself is: would anyone (besides me) notice? If not, continue and compensate as necessary. So far the design looks good.

  15. Lordy you have come too far to rip out. Just compensate and go from there. You've done so much, and it's so beautiful! No one will know that there was supposed to be an empty thread around the square. You can make it yours and make it unique from here on out!!

  16. Don't rip it all out.It is so beautiful, who'd have noticed if you'd not told us.
I just love the whole design.

  17. If you drink enough Tequila, you won't care that it's one thread off....just sayin'. Seriously, see if you can't compensate someplace else.

  18. Look further ahead in the chart. Is there a place where that one thread/space will make a difference? Is there a spot where you could easily insert the one space/thread? Everything looks as if it is fine so far. Lastly, email Debbie Rowley, tell her what was done (photos help) and ask her advice.

  19. Leave it be - it was meant to be the way it is.

But, by all means, have a shot of tequila :)

  22. I vote for leaving it in!! And emailing the designer is a great idea! There is nothing some chocolate and a Diet Coke (Diet Pepsi for me) can't handle!!

  23. After a bottle of Tequila even you will not be able to see an error in counting. Keep Calm and Stitch On!!!

  24. It is beautiful, small imperfections make it unique! "Never tell of your mistakes". This is a wisdom from my brother, I had wallpapered ( by myself) my large bathroom and behind the door there was a mismatch....He said " why do you tell people no one will ever notice! He was right no one ever did.

  25. I with the other drinkers up there...drink the tequila...don't forget the salt & lime...and let the stitching be. It's beautiful as is!!

  26. Oh no! :( I think is looks lovely and if you hadn't told us, none of us would know any different. Do what makes you happy :)

  27. I wouldn't have known if you hadn't mentioned it. Does the mistake bug you so much that is all you see? If yes, then you should either rip it out or start anew on a different piece of canvas.

  28. Oh for goodness sake, just leave it and keep working. The whole thing is beautiful so far.

  29. Carry on dear wayward one,
It'll be fabulous when you are done.
Lay your scissors down to rest,
    Don't you rip no more!

  32. I agree with "mskathk", I don't think you'll run into any potential issues until you get to the outer scotch stitch border. Even then, I only think you'll need to shift those pretty clusters of green cross hatch stitches (their true name escapes me) inward one thread, to maintain the final distance between them & the outer border. You might not need to move them at all, if they're two threads from the outer scotch border.

  33. What can you live with? Sometimes sleeping on it makes the decision easier.

  34. It is beautiful! Are you familiar with the Japanese concept of Wabi-sabi? It is an aesthetic that embraces the imperfections in life. The arts & crafts movement had a similar theory that nature is random and doesn't always duplicate itself exactly. It makes for wonderful surprises in life. I have never thought of needlepoint as a place to apply these theories. From my little computer screen, it looks perfectly symmetrical. But, even if it isn't, what a lovely way to embrace this surprise. Whatever you decide to do is the right decision. I have enjoyed watching you stitch this piece so much, I bought it and it arrived today. Can't wait to start.

  35. It's gorgeous and no-one will know there is a boo-boo but you! Find a way to make it work!

  36. Those lovely feather corners are OK it seems to me. That would mean you could take out the green scotch stitches and the others in those areas and redo them without disturbing all that work on each corner. Looks like the corner stitches are worked right at the corners of the interior square so they are fine. If you care enough to change it!

  38. I think it looks fine.
You've got so much work and expense into it already.

  39. It looks beautiful the way it is, but you know that already. The standard I use for ripping out is if it is going to bother me every time I look at the piece I will rip it out. If it won't bother me - leave it in.

  40. To pick up on what stitchwiz said about Wabi Sabi, here's a quote from a Navajo Indian weaver: The traditional teaching of the Navajo weaving is that you have to put a mistake in there. It must be done because only the Creator is perfect. We’re not perfect, so we don’t make a perfect rug.” You have let your creativity run wild on thread color with gorgeous results! Now you have the opportunity to do the same on the outer edge design details. Can't wait to see the finish!

  41. I would drink the tequila but not rip! It is lovely.
However, I also take the I will look at it tomorrow and see how I still feel. The Amadeus stitches look amazing, they are one of my favorite Jean Hilton stitches.
