LIST SCHMIST

Well, firstly, may I just say a big fat teary thank you for all of your concern regarding my ennui of late? Yes, I promise that all will be well again soon and that all of the appropriate authorities are on board, so please don't cry for me, Argentina. I am strong like bull.

Just a bull that's a little on the comatose side. That's all.

So about this list thing....

In my mis-spent youth, I was quite a list writer. As a matter of fact, if I could have figured out how to have done it, I would have written lists for a living. Sadly, this never came to be, so I was left to enjoying list scribbling as a hobby only. But what a hobby it was! I wrote my heart out on these lists, and can remember the smug satisfaction I felt as I crossed and crossed and crossed all of the items on the list as I plowed my way through life.

Now....not so much.

I didn't write lists for a very long time, but after witnessing Aunt Chrissy's success with them last year, I decided to give it a try. You see, at the beginning of the warm weather last year, Aunt Chrissy wrote a list of all of the stuff that she wanted to get done around her house. Things like painting and landscaping, and garage cleaning. All of the stuff that a responsible homeowner would do to make their little castle perfectly perfect in every way. The amazing thing is that she tackled this list with a grim determination that didn't relent until the very last thing was complete.

I was so proud of her I couldn't stand it.

My lists aren't quite that ambitious. As a matter of fact, I just wrote "empty the damn dishwasher already", followed by "check to see if Stewey has run away from home because he hasn't been seen or heard from since tea and toast this morning". What can I say? I'm pacing myself it would seem.

I've thought about starting a stitchy list, but I'm pretty sure that would just send me right back under the covers. There are at least seven hundred and ninety four projects that I'd like to complete before the SpringTide is over, and once the London Olympics start, I just know that I'm going to be jonesing for something USA'ish, so the mind already starts to whir. I suppose that I could write a list of all of the new techniques I like to learn (like wool applique), and then I could find a class or a kit that would teach me said technique on a rainy afternoon. But that would mean that I might have to put shoes on and leave the house, and we all know how THAT will end up, so methinks my stitchy list should just say "stitch".

What's on your lists? Do you set goals or jot down reminders? What about stitchy shopping lists? Do you head to your LNS armed with a list of stuff you want to purchase, or do you just let the wind take you wherever it may?

I guess that's a lot of heavy thinking for a Tuesday. Maybe it's time to tuck myself into the happy chair for a little afternoon needle-poking session. I've got Plum Street Sampler's "A Handwork's Pace" all q-snapped up and ready to go, so I'm thinking that this might be a good day for a new start! Woo Hoo!

  1. I am a list person. I have a list of all my UFOs and WIPs. They are numbered and then I draw a number when one is finished so then I pull out the next project to finish.
I also have a list of books that I want to read and listen to on audio.
I also have a yearly journal that lists what TV shows I watched that year, movies I watched, what I cross stitched that year and what books I read.listened to. Then the back part is a personal diary. I am great at lists and keeping them going but writing in a personal diary I suck at.

  4. I am an obsessive list-maker and I think I've always been one. When they made us take a 'time management' seminar at work the guy told us some people will put an item on their list that they already finished just to have the thrill of crossing it off. I can relate!! I have lots of different stitching lists....stuff to frame...stuff to finish....stuff to start...stuff to buy...aaarrghh! I cause my own stress most of the time LOL.

  5. I'm a list person too. :) I make lists for when my Mom and I go out so we know where we are going and what we are spending money on. :) I also make lists for work. I have all my clients on my phone, but I have to make a paper list as well!

  6. One of my friends told me I should write lists for a living because he enjoyed reading the ones I had written (Facebook memes). So if you find a way to make it work, let me know.

  7. I have lists of my lists. Multiple copies in fact so I have one at home, one at work and one in the car (because you never know when you will need it). However, my list obsession has nothing to do with being able to cross anything off it. In fact, most of my lists are more of an inventorial (is that a word) nature than a "to-do" list. It makes me feel oh-so-smug and in control of what seems to me a very chaotic and disorderly world.

  8. Me too, I have to have a grocery list, or it would be real ugly at the check out counter. I have to do lists, and stitchy lists. I have in my head a list of items I wish I had on a list. It is called OCD gone crazy!!

  9. Lists - chore lists for the day, grocery lists, wish lists, baby lists for bigger lists. You name it - I can list it to death! lol

  10. So glad you are feeling better!
I am so in awe of all your projects, completed and in progress.
I just finished the winter alphabet by Lizzie Kate and then I found the spring, summer and autumn alphabets!

  11. My lists are not as ambitious as Aunt Chrissy's. But I do make a list of errands and what I need from stores. No stitchy project list for me, everything would be on it. ;)

  12. Being the compulsive organizer that I am, I make lists. I use darling Vera Bradley spiral notebooks with pockets and bookmarks. I have a running to-do list for major projects (home-improvement ala Aunt C.) and daily to-do's. Fortunately, I've learned that God only laughs at our lists so I must be flexible. If something doesn't get crossed off, there's always tomorrow, and if tomorrow doesn't come, well, the list won't matter. Oh, and I do keep a stitching journal--saves me money because it keeps me from buying duplicates and lets me know what's kitted and what's not! Keep napping and stitching. Feel better soon! 13. I'm a list maker, too. Lists for work, lists for household tasks, grocery shopping lists--these I reference most frequently. I keep a running list of books I want to read. I have a couple of stitchy lists--items I want to get (and I do take the list to the LNS and always allow myself additional items!) and a list of items that need to be framed or somehow finished. I don't have a list of WIP or UFOs yet, but Shelleen has me thinking of starting one!
BTW, I'm also new to your blog and loving it. Someone commented on how much they enjoyed your article in the latest Needlepoint Now, and I immediately got a subscription.
    Feel better soon!

  14. I'm a compulsive list maker, but I always manage to lose them or forget them once they've been compiled. I DO usually manage to take my stitchy lists to the LNS with me, but they do little good as I am easily distracted by new stuff and leave iwth just about everything BUT what was on my list. (doesn't help that my LNS is usually out of half the things I went in for in th first place)

  15. I am a serial list maker, i make a fresh list every day for all sorts of things, I am also a compulsive labeller too!! I have to organise and re-organise my stitchy stuff at least once a month or I get very stressed with my stash!

  16. Ugh, lists. I make lists sometimes. And I'll follow them for a few days. Then all the easy stuff will be done and just the hard stuff is left. Then I put the list away and make a new one. I try not to make stitching lists (besides shopping lists, and those don't count), especially right now. I'm currently suffering through the mile long list of things I have to do between now and Friday when I move, and now and Wednesday when I leave my job, and now and the 14th when I get married. Good stuff overall, but the lists of things to do are making me a little stressed. Well, maybe more than a little.

Hope you have some list-free stitchy mojo in your near future!

  17. My birth sign is Capricorn and we are notorious for making lists,I am no exception. I make lists of my lists!!! If I make a list I can nearly always remember what is on it..very helpful when I forget my shopping list which I do,often.
Hoping your stitching mojo will be back in full force and it will be full steam ahead. Also hoping Stewey arrives home for his next meal,on time:)

  18. I'm a list maker...on recycled paper.

I don't usually accomplish everything on the lists but it sure does feel good to write a line through an item when it is completed.

  19. I have always been a list maker too...although, when I was younger it was for fun...now, it's out of necessity (I have ICRS [I can't remember shit] :o)

Plum Street Samplers sound like a nice new start.

  20. I love lists!!!!! I make them all the time with commentary :-). Now do I follow them, to a degree. If it's house, responsible type stuff or errands I diligently cross them off. My stitching list is very fluid, just depends on my mood, LOL.

  21. I am definitely a list maker..I have too much other stuff in my head! Lol! I feel like I have been productive if I see things crossed off..but I usually write down three more things to take the place of each thing I cross off.

  22. I am definitley a list person. I love lists. I might not get the things on the lists all accomplished but it keeps me on track with my two boys, my husband, the farm and life in general. I say do your lists but don't put any restrants on yourself to keeping to the list. Just use it as a guide.

    Happy list making (and stitching).

  23. I have never been a list maker. Well, at least not until I turned 55. I have age related attention deficit disorder (grin) and CRS. My list making started when I would go to the grocery store and couldn't remember what I needed. Now I keep a list on the refrigerator that I pull off to take with me to the grocery store. No lists of stitching. I'm not sure I'd live long enough to compile that list. :-)

Glad you are feeling better. Give Little Lord Fauntleroy a hug for me.

  24. I have a list of my 171 completed stitchy project with the recipients of each as well as a list of my accumulated unstitched canvas stash. The unstitched list is not counted so I can continue to justify buying new canvases. I wish I had taken photos of each project that I have gifted because I would like to remember the details. I've contemplated listing my thread stash but I think I would not be able to keep it up to date. [Then I would consider myself a failure, lose my job, become homeless, die and go to hell -- a result of misdirected Catholic school guilt. Therefore I won't start.]

I'm pleased that your energy seems to be improving a bit. I know it is slow going. I hope Stewey is sharing his tea and toast as it has such healing properties.

Sophie and Smudge send their love.

  25. I make lists of books I want, new stash I'm interested in, and grocery lists. My grocery list is made from one side of the store to the other. I know where everything's at. That's because I hate grocery shopping! The name of the game is to get in and out with a minimum of collisions. I have to write reminders for my reminders! If there were sticky notes sticky enough to stick to foreheads, that's where my reminders would go! I blame it on menopause.

  26. I have my shopping list done in the order of the supermarket aisles too but then they go and MOVE things!!! I hate that. Lists - love them. Books, Stitchy stuff, To Do, projects, plans etc etc. and my best one of all is the Holiday Packing List - never go away without swimming nose clip, tweezers or knickers if you have one of those. Hope things perk up for you soon Coni - you certainly perk things up for me with your news and your lovely stitching.

  28. I make lists...lots of them. Then I lose them.

    Kisses to Stewey and Bosco...

  29. Lists can be very scary things indeed. A grocery list will send me to the candy aisle for a bribe.Stitching lists are trouble when they are still being added to at page 199 eeekk and to-do lists send my dh into a panic attack. I work under the system of one idea into the top of the brain and one idea out at the bottom. Works for me. Now what was it I needed for tomorrow?

  30. Oh is this bad...I make lists of the lists I have to make. I have a small moleskin book in my purse with stitching things I have, some things I want, etc. I have double bought before and don't want to keep doing that. I have lots and lots of lists in Excel - movies I have seen, want to see, books to read, books read. My family is list makers - my sister has a sheet with things that she buys very often so that you only have to check off the item when needed - preventing the rewriting of things week after week...

Enjoy your Easter - are you having ham?

  31. I *love* lists! But I almost never do what's on the list because I get sidetracked. So I add things that I've already done to a list just so I can check it off and feel like I've accomplished things on my list anyway...

  32. LIST - Low Interest Stuff To-do
Once I make the list, feels like I have now dealt with the crap so I'm done just that fast.

This only works if you have the attention span and energy level of a slug.

    I qualify.
